Assessed attributes for Portkey, each with the source it came from and the date it was checked
Licence Proprietary SaaS for the hosted Portkey platform (observability, prompt management, governance) sold on paid plans; the vendor also publishes an open-source AI Gateway core (Portkey-AI/gateway) under MIT, documented by Portkey as the same product line's "Open Source" offering Source, checked
Self-host partial: the hosted Portkey cloud itself is not self-hostable; Enterprise is a hybrid deployment where the Data Plane runs in the customer VPC while the Control Plane (dashboard, analytics) stays hosted by Portkey. The vendor's pricing page separately offers an Open Source tier described as Host it Yourself / Deploy Locally (https://portkey.ai/pricing), and the docs navigation still lists Air-Gapped Deployments (Legacy), so the always-hosted Control Plane holds for the current hybrid model. Source, checked
OpenTelemetry yes — Portkey acts as an OTLP backend; OTLP/HTTP endpoint https://api.portkey.ai/v1/otel with signal-specific /v1/traces and /v1/logs paths, plus W3C traceparent support and GenAI semantic-convention enrichment Source, checked
Free tier limits Developer plan, "Free Forever": 10k recorded logs per month (requests are not blocked past the limit, only logging stops); retention 3 days for logs, 30 days for metrics; up to 3 prompt templates; community support. Seat count not stated. Source, checked
Price per 100k traces not trace-denominated: priced per recorded log (LLM request), not per trace/span — Production is $49/month including 100k recorded logs per month (i.e. $49 per 100k logs at plan level), with overage of $9/Month for Every 100K Up to 3M Requests thereafter. Currency symbol on the page is "$"; no other currency shown. Source, checked
Data residency unstated for the hosted cloud — no hosting regions or residency options are listed; residency is addressed only via the Enterprise tier's private/VPC deployment, and the Production tier is explicitly flagged as unsuitable where residency guarantees are required Source, checked
Retention Developer (free): 3 days for logs, 30 days for metrics. Production ($49/mo): 30 days for logs, 90 days for metrics. Enterprise: custom retention periods for logs & metrics. Source, checked
SDK languages Official SDKs: Python and Node.js/TypeScript. Also documented: C# (.NET), plus OpenAI-compatible/community libraries. Listed as "Coming Soon": Java, PHP, Go, Rust, C++, Ruby. OTel ingestion is language-agnostic (Python, JavaScript, Java, Go and more). Source, checked
Last release Enterprise Gateway 2.18.0, dated 2026-08-10 on Portkey's own release changelog; the same changelog page dates the platform's other components — Frontend 1.9.4 (2026-07-27), Backend 1.22.0, Data Service 1.9.0. Portkey publishes no separate dated release feed for the multi-tenant cloud itself; these component release notes are the vendor's own dated releases for the Portkey platform. Source, checked

Assessment

The hosted Portkey platform (gateway, observability, guardrails, governance, prompt management) is proprietary SaaS sold on paid plans. The vendor also publishes an MIT-licensed open-source AI Gateway core, presented on its pricing page as the product line's host-it-yourself Open Source tier.

The hosted cloud itself is not self-hostable; Enterprise is hybrid, with the data plane in the customer's VPC and the control plane (administration, configs, analytics) hosted by Portkey. Portkey acts as an OTLP backend, with signal-specific trace and log paths and W3C traceparent support. Official SDKs are Python and Node.js/TypeScript, with C# documented; OTel ingestion is language-agnostic.

The unit is a recorded log (an LLM request), not a trace or span. The free Developer plan records 10k logs a month; exceeding the limit stops logging but not requests, and retention is 3 days for logs, 30 for metrics. Production is $49 a month including 100k recorded logs, then $9 per 100k up to 3M requests, with 30 days of log retention and 90 for metrics.

Data residency is unstated for the hosted cloud; the pricing page flags Production as not recommended where residency guarantees are required. Enterprise Gateway 2.18.0 is dated 10 August 2026. Every portkey.ai page carries a banner reading "Portkey is now PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway", while the page title and docs masthead still name the product Portkey.
