Laminar

Laminar is an Apache-2.0, OpenTelemetry-native observability platform, self-hostable by Docker Compose or Helm and sold as Laminar Cloud priced by ingested gigabyte, with data residency unstated.

Assessed attributes for Laminar, each with the source it came from and the date it was checked
Licence Apache-2.0 for the Laminar open-source core (github.com/lmnr-ai/lmnr; LICENSE.md reads 'Apache License / Version 2.0, January 2004' and 'Copyright 2024 LMNR AI, Inc.' — https://raw.githubusercontent.com/lmnr-ai/lmnr/main/LICENSE.md). Signals, signal event clusters and email/Slack alerts are not in the OSS/Helm distributions and need a paid enterprise licence key (LMNR_LICENSE_KEY); on Laminar Cloud, the listed product, they are included with the subscription. Source, checked
Self-host yes — the same Laminar codebase self-hosts: Docker Compose for local/single-node, Kubernetes Helm chart for production; Signals, signal event clusters and email/Slack alerts only with an enterprise licence key (Laminar Cloud, the listed product, is the vendor-managed alternative) Source, checked
OpenTelemetry yes — OpenTelemetry-native; the Laminar Cloud backend accepts OTLP/gRPC, OTLP/HTTP/proto and OTLP/HTTP/json, so non-Laminar OTel SDKs can export directly Source, checked
Free tier limits Laminar Cloud Free plan $0/month: 1 GB data (no overage), $5 in Signals credits, 7 day retention, 1 project, 1 seat, Community support Source, checked
Price per 100k traces not trace-denominated: Laminar Cloud prices by ingested trace data volume in GB plus separate token-billed Signals credits — Free $0 includes 1 GB; Starter $30/month includes 3 GB then $2/GB; Pro $150/month includes 10 GB then $1.50/GB; Enterprise custom. No traces/spans/events count is published, so no per-100k-traces figure can be derived without inventing a GB-per-trace assumption. Currency USD. Source, checked
Data residency unstated — no cloud region or residency option for Laminar Cloud is published on the pricing page, docs, privacy notice or data-use page; the privacy notice defers infrastructure detail to a trust center (compliance.laminar.sh) that renders no readable content beyond the words 'Trust center' (604-byte client-rendered shell, checked 2026-08-22), so residency there is unverifiable rather than absent. Self-hosted and managed-self-hosted deployments — a different deployment of the same codebase, not the listed product — keep data in the customer's own infrastructure. Source, checked
Retention Laminar Cloud — Free: 7 days; Starter: 30 days; Pro: 6 months; Enterprise: Custom Source, checked
SDK languages TypeScript/JavaScript and Python (the two documented Laminar SDKs); any OpenTelemetry-instrumented language can also send OTLP directly Source, checked
Last release v0.2.1 — latest release, 2026-07-09. The GitHub release page renders the date without a year ('09 Jul'); the year is corroborated first-hand by the vendor's own published container image ghcr.io/lmnr-ai/app-server:v0.2.1, whose OCI labels read org.opencontainers.image.version 'v0.2.1' and org.opencontainers.image.created '2026-07-09T19:21:55.688Z' (image config created 2026-07-09T19:32:57.688Z), read from the registry on 2026-08-22. The vendor's docs changelog is not version-numbered; its newest dated section is August 2026. Source, checked

Assessment

The Laminar core is Apache-2.0 (lmnr-ai/lmnr), and the same code base self-hosts: Docker Compose for local or single-node use, a Kubernetes Helm chart for production. Three features sit outside the open distributions: Signals, signal event clusters, and email and Slack alerts need an enterprise licence key, and are included with a Laminar Cloud subscription.

The backend is OpenTelemetry-native and accepts OTLP over gRPC, HTTP/proto and HTTP/json, so non-Laminar OTel SDKs can export to it directly. The documented Laminar SDKs are TypeScript/JavaScript and Python.

Laminar Cloud prices by ingested trace data volume in gigabytes, plus token-billed Signals credits. Free is $0 with 1 GB and no overage, $5 in Signals credits, 7 days retention, one project and one seat; Starter is $30 a month with 3 GB then $2/GB; Pro is $150 with 10 GB then $1.50/GB; Enterprise is custom. No traces, spans or events count is published, so no per-100k-traces figure is derivable. Retention runs 7 days, 30 days, 6 months and custom.

Data residency is unstated. No cloud region appears on the pricing page, docs, privacy notice or data-use page; the privacy notice defers to a trust centre that rendered no readable content on 22 August 2026, leaving residency unverifiable rather than absent. The latest release is v0.2.1, dated 9 July 2026 by the vendor's container image.
