Braintrust
Braintrust is a proprietary hosted evaluation and observability platform billed on processed data volume and score counts, with Apache-2.0 client SDKs and a customer-operated data plane on Enterprise.

| Licence | proprietary hosted platform (Braintrust publishes no licence for the platform itself; the data-plane container images are closed) — the official client SDKs are Apache-2.0, and the self-hosting deployment artifacts (Terraform modules for AWS and GCP, and the Helm chart) are public Apache-2.0 repositories Source, checked github.comhttps://github.com/braintrustdata/braintrust-sdk/blob/main/LICENSEChecked |

| Self-host | partial: Enterprise plan only — the customer deploys and operates the data plane in their own cloud from Braintrust's published deployment artifacts, while Braintrust always operates the control plane (BYOC is the managed variant) Source, checked www.braintrust.devhttps://www.braintrust.dev/docs/admin/deploymentChecked |
| OpenTelemetry | yes — Braintrust acts as an OpenTelemetry backend; OTLP HTTP endpoint https://api.braintrust.dev/otel/v1/traces, plus BraintrustSpanProcessor in the Python and TypeScript SDKs Source, checked www.braintrust.devhttps://www.braintrust.dev/docs/integrations/sdk-integrations/opentelemetryChecked |
| Free tier limits | Starter plan, $0/month: 1 GB processed data/month (then $4/GB), 10k scores/month (then $2.50/1k), $10 model credits/month, 14-day retention, unlimited users, projects, datasets, playgrounds and experiments; no credit card required Source, checked www.braintrust.devhttps://www.braintrust.dev/pricingChecked |
| Price per 100k traces | not trace-denominated: USD pricing is a platform fee plus processed-data volume and score counts — Starter $0/mo with 1 GB then $4/GB; Pro $249/mo with 5 GB then $3/GB; scores $2.50/1k (Starter) or $1.50/1k (Pro). Braintrust publishes no per-trace or per-span unit, so a per-100k-traces figure cannot be derived without assuming a bytes-per-trace value. | Data residency | SaaS organizations pick a data plane region of US or EU at creation and cannot change it afterwards (US https://api.braintrust.dev, EU https://api-eu.braintrust.dev); BYOC and self-hosted (Enterprise) keep the data plane in the customer's own cloud Source, checked www.braintrust.devhttps://www.braintrust.dev/docs/admin/organizationsChecked |
| Retention | Logs and playground data: Starter 14-day; Pro 30-day, extendable up to 180-day for an additional storage charge ($0.50/GB/mo after); Enterprise custom, set with the account team, up to 365-day. Experiments have up to 365-day retention on all plans. Source, checked www.braintrust.devhttps://www.braintrust.dev/docs/plans-and-limitsChecked |

Assessment
Braintrust publishes no licence for the platform itself and its data-plane images are closed, so the platform is recorded as proprietary. Open parts of the same product line are Apache-2.0: the client SDKs, the AWS and GCP Terraform modules and the Helm chart.
Self-hosting is Enterprise-only and partial: Braintrust always operates the control plane, while the customer deploys the data plane in their own cloud from Braintrust's published artefacts, BYOC being the managed variant. SaaS organisations pick a US or EU data plane at creation and cannot change it.
Braintrust acts as an OpenTelemetry backend with an OTLP HTTP endpoint and a span processor in the Python and TypeScript SDKs. SDKs cover TypeScript, Python, Go, Java, Ruby and C#, with Rust in alpha.
Pricing is in processed gigabytes and score counts, never traces or spans: Starter $0 with 1 GB then $4/GB and 10k scores then $2.50/1k; Pro $249 a month with 5 GB then $3/GB. The vendor's plans-and-limits page (braintrust.dev/docs/plans-and-limits, checked 22 August 2026) marks that Pro figure as promotional, stating "promo, $100/mo after Sept 1, 2026". Log retention runs 14 days on Starter and 30 on Pro, extendable to 180 for a storage charge and to 365 on Enterprise; experiments keep up to 365 days on all plans. The latest data plane is v2.11.0 (August 2026).
